The collection of four London-based artworks from my panoramic series, created in 2021 and 2022, is unique in that completing them today would likely be unfeasible. Greenwich Park Observatory offers a stunning panoramic view of the university building and Queens House. During 2021, London experienced an unusual quietness due to travel restrictions caused by Covid, making the city feel eerily still at times typically bustling with tourists. January 2022 was particularly serene, allowing me to create typewriter art in locations that would usually be heaving with people.
Despite this, working in January presented its own challenges. While creating this piece in Greenwich, the low winter sun and frosty grass tested my ability to type. With my hands gloveless for accuracy, the biting cold made typing a real struggle. Many of these challenges are reflected in the artwork as concealed type-written thoughts for the viewer to find. To create this artwork, I brought along a red compact 1970’s SilverReed typewriter and foldout picnic chair.
