A recurring theme in my work is how one project serves as a catalyst for the next. Following the success of my April 2022 exhibition, I was eager to organise more events. When I inquired about using the rooftop space of a historic venue for a piece of artwork, an exciting opportunity arose. This led to my first 360-degree typewriter drawing, capturing the view of the historic town of Maldon, Essex, from the rooftop of The Moot Hall, a civic building dating back to the 15th century.
During my discussions with the venue's team, they expressed enthusiasm for featuring my work and proposed keeping a print of the finished artwork in exchange for hosting a month-long exhibition. It was an incredible opportunity.
Creating this piece presented significant challenges, requiring a completely new typing technique to achieve a bird's-eye view that twisted into a globe-like projection. I often found myself tilting my head at 90 degrees in both directions, sometimes propping my typewriter at angles with chunky books to ensure I was typing straight or curved lines. While it isn’t my largest drawing, it is certainly my most ambitious and technically challenging work of 2022.
In 2023, this artwork received an amazing opportunity to be exhibited in Taiwan at the Chimei Museum, renowned for housing the largest collection of violins and Western art in the world. The exhibition, titled "Machine Meets Art," ran from the summer of 2023 to early 2024. I flew 6,000 miles to Tainan, where I was warmly welcomed for the grand opening. Remarkably, the museum purchased the original piece. It’s mind-boggling to reflect on how my art and career evolved; a work created for an exhibition in the UK ended up being acquired by a major art collection in Taiwan.
This is a second edition of the artwork and measures 60cm x 60cm. The artwork is a limited edition of 200.
