Evening in Central Park is my second evening scene ever typed and my first depiction of Central Park. Typed with my 1930’s Smith Premier typewriter, this piece captures winter at Wollman Rink, one of the park’s most iconic corners.

I have used every vintage colour ink typewriter ribbon that I have collected since 2014 to bring the skaters, lights, and snow-covered park to life.

Inspired by Where’s Waldo and the character-filled illustrations of Martin Handford, this piece celebrates not the chaos of the city, but the moments of joy and community found in Central Park during winter. There is also a touch of nostalgia drawn from A Charlie Brown Christmas as each skater has their own distinct personality, from striped scarves and puffer jackets to spotty jumpers and woolly hats.

Insights about the artwork itself, it took three weeks to type and contains over half a million typed marks. 

A few playful touches, including “I glide on my butt,” which sums up my own skating ability perfectly.

The ice rink is a space that went on to feature in movies such as Serendipity, Love Story, and Home Alone 2 (subtly referenced in the scene). And if you look closely, you’ll even find a tiny version of me typing at my machine…a nod to the process itself
