This portrait honours George Eliot, the pen name of Mary Ann Evans, one of the most important novelists of the Victorian era. Writing under a male pseudonym to ensure her work was taken seriously, Eliot challenged social norms and produced literary classics such as Middlemarch and Silas Marner, celebrated for their psychological depth and realism. Typed into the artwork are subtle references to her pioneering intellect, her personal life, and the profound empathy that defines her writing.
