This portrait honours Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, a trailblazing African American writer, poet, and abolitionist. Born free in 1825, she used her voice and pen to campaign for the end of slavery, racial justice, and women's rights. Typed into the artwork are quiet nods to her activism, her moral courage, and the strength she carried in a divided nation.
